Q&A: Design Trade Resource’s Becky Wein

The Devon-based interior designer dishes on her decorating secrets.

After 16 years of running her own interior-design firm, Becky Wein has opened Design Trade Resource in Devon. “It’s not a retail store. It’s a place where designers and architects can shop locally with their clients and purchase boutique fabrics, furnishings, lighting and accessories,” says Wein. “We’ll also be hosting trade events and educational seminars for designers.”

Personal decorating style: I’m a firm believer in “less is more” and that your home should be a haven that’s comfortable, inviting and relaxing.

Favorite room in her home: My bedroom. I still read to my children at night and snuggle in to hear about their days. It’s a sanctuary where everything else completely falls away and I can be present. It also helps that there’s no cell service there.

Prized possessions: The tiny plaster hand impressions from when my children were in preschool. When I see them, they bring me back to a time when those little hands worked hard to do simple tasks.

Designer who inspires her: I’ve always admired Sister Parish for her ability to make clients’ homes a reflection of their lives, memories and experiences.

Favorite design advice: Never use artificial flowers.

Trend of the moment: If I had to pick something somewhat trendy, I’d say that high gloss is back in a very big way, and I do love it. We’ve been doing lacquered walls and furnishings forever. But now, people are seeing them everywhere, so they’re a lot more comfortable with lacquer and high gloss than they used to be.

Favorite room to design: We have a joke in the office that the bedroom is where it all happens, so it better be a place where you’re happy. We’re only half-joking.

Three words that sum up her design: Clean, livable, beautiful.
