Q&A: Interior Designer Larina Kase

The Devon-based decorator shares her tips for creating a beautiful home.

Personal decorating style: A mix of modern and classic—and customized to the client. I enjoy designing coastal-inspired and casually elegant spaces.

Most prized possession in her home: A white alabaster sculpture I carved in college. I love using stone in my designs.

Designer who inspires her: My aunt, Arnelle Kase, who’s an interior designer in California. Her spaces have a creative, effortlessly chic quality that I greatly admire.

Favorite room in her house: A breakfast area with a reclaimed wood farm table, red center-splat chairs, and a floor-to-ceiling gallery wall of my kids’ art.

Favorite design advice: Go with your instincts, and select what makes you happy.

Color she couldn’t design without: White. It adds instant brightness and gives the eye a place to rest, which allows the use of a lot of texture and color.

Favorite trend of the moment: Mixing things up. I’m so glad that it is in style to mix metals, patterns, wood tones and shades of white. This feels so relaxed and inviting.

Favorite room to design: Dining spaces, because they almost always have a chandelier, and I think that lighting makes a room.

Her definition of good taste: Honoring your true style—and editing.

Three words that sum up her design: Fresh, artistic and personal.
