Ann Crumb, Media and Brooklyn, N.Y.
Tony-nominated, Barrymore-winning actress who plays opera singer Maria Callas in Master Class at the Media Theatre Feb. 3-21
» Book on her nightstand: The Dogs of Babel by Carolyn Parkhurst—it was fascinating.
» iPod artists on repeat: I have Annie Lennox, all of Michael McDonald’s Motown series and Amy Winehouse. In other words, I don’t have opera on there, even though I’m playing Maria Callas.
» Restaurant of the hour: Azie in Media. Their pad Thai is just the best I’ve tried anywhere.
» One thing she knows for sure: Nothing can be known for sure.
» Personal heroes: In terms of thought, somebody like Albert Schweitzer. I’m so thrilled Barack Obama is our president; he’s changed the way we look at everything in the country.
» Very own vici: I do lots of animal rescue work. For every living being that I literally know I’ve saved their life, it gives me a quiet kind of happiness.
» Zen destination: I’ve traveled a lot of the world, and one of my favorite places is in Kauai, Hawaii. It’s the least developed of the major islands and has a lot of natural growth.
» If she had an extra hour each day, she would: Try to write more or do some kind of meditation.
» Life view: chance or fate? Obviously, at any given moment, everything that’s happening in the universe, it’s influencing something else—so it’s part fate. But then you could say it’s chance, depending on where you move.
» Most marked characteristic: I’m the person that, when I’m driving, I see every animal that’s lying on the side of the road, or if someone I pass looks sad. Other people go, “I didn’t see that.”
» Quality she admires most in others: Kindness.
» Mantra: I believe that all beings are equal. Every little thing counts, feels and wants to live as much as everyone else.
