Kevin Nolan, Edgmont; President, Nolan Painting
It seems like there are more Nolan Painting signs than stop signs in the Main Line area. Now celebrating its 35th year, the company has painted more than 1,500 homes. One of the keys to Kevin Nolan’s success is supporting the community that supports him. He sponsors more than 150 community events every year, and he works with the Main Line Chamber of Commerce and the Haverford Area YMCA.
How he started Nolan Painting: I was a sophomore in college and jogged through neighborhoods putting homemade business cards in mailboxes. From that, the company grew to 75 employees.
Best-kept secret on the Main Line: Ridley Creek State Park [1]. It’s a wonderful place, but the entrances are hard to find, and there’s not sufficient parking. I’ve given permission to build trails right through my property. Some folks might not want people on their land, but I think it helps increase the value of the property. And it’s the right thing to do.
The last place he ate that he loved: Santa Fe Burrito in the Wynnewood Shopping Center. I love the freshness of the ingredients and the combination of cilantro and other herbs.
Favorite local restaurant: Gullifty’s. We went there after each of my four kids graduated from high school, and my company painted the newly remodeled version of the restaurant.
Favorite local places to shop for food: I go to Ardmore Farmers Market [2], Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and Giant.
The perfect date night: Dinner at Paramour [3] in the Wayne Hotel, then a trip to Chanticleer.
If he had 30 minutes to himself, he would: Run. I’m on a quest to run marathons in all 50 states; only 800 people in the world have accomplished that. I just did my 35th in Kentucky.
Favorite places to run: Ridley Creek State Park, Radnor Trail, Haverford College Loop and Valley Forge National Historical Park.
Favorite local event: The Main Line Jazz & Food Festival [4] in Wayne (on hiatus this year). That town is like a second home to me because I started my business there all those years ago.
