New in Haverford: Green Engine Coffee Company

Zach Morris brings his emerald green La Marzocco GB5 espresso machine to the Main Line.

On Wednesday, Nov. 4, local beverage specialist Zach Morris brought what he hopes is an unparalleled coffee experience to the heart of Haverford. Green Engine Coffee Co., a coffee bar serving fresh artisanal brews with seasonal menus including baked goods and sandwiches, made in-house, made its debut.

“Downtown Philadelphia has so many great coffee options and I’m committed to bringing that level of service along with the finest coffee to the Main Line in a welcoming, laid-back environment at our new cafe,” says Morris. A Philadelphia native and trained sommelier, he developed a love of coffee during his years working in the beverage industry. “We’ll focus on making it a comfortable atmosphere for our guests to enjoy a cup of coffee with friends and neighbors.”

Green Engine serves a selection of coffee and espresso beverages from local favorite Rival Bros. Coffee. Working with top-of-line equipment, including their “Green Engine”— an emerald green La Marzocco GB5 espresso machine, handmade in Florence, Italy, and an Oji Kyoto Cold Drip brewer from Japan, Green Engine’s talented baristas custom prepare all drinks.

For those looking to make these brews at home, Green Engine offers 12-ounce bags of Rival Bros. beans for purchase, alongside recommended coffee merchandise for perfect home brewing.

Morris and his wife Jocelyn, a talented designer, worked together to come up with the design and aesthetic for this venture. The light marble-topped coffee bar of white and natural earth tones, and large bay windows look on Haverford Station Road creating a bright, inviting atmosphere in each of the distinct seating areas. Reclaimed dark wood flooring brings balance to the room’s modern, yet rustic elements, including white subway tiles, custom wood tabletops, repurposed church pews and a plush tufted couch. A mix of textures was used throughout, most notably a customized 81-square-foot vertical green living wall accent to tie it all together. To make guests even more comfortable, they offer Wi-Fi.

Morris, a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, has a variety of experience within the beverage industry, including four years in sales as a wine importer and distributor. He later earned the title of director of education for both The National Wine School and the Philadelphia Beer School, which he held for the past six years. In addition, Morris has been the co-owner of two sustainable businesses—Urban Ecoforms and BioNeighbors, a design-to-build firm specializing in green roofs and walls, as well as landscape architecture.

Green Engine Coffee Co. is open Monday through Saturday, from 6:30 a.m.–6 p.m., and Sunday from 7 a.m.–4 p.m.
