Mom Knows Best

And Mom deserves the best—which is why the nonprofit Mothers & More welcomes Main Line moms to its spring open house on May 5 and other events that give them their fair share of “me” time.

With Mother’s Day this Sunday, what better time to celebrate Mothers & More—the international nonprofit organization committed to improving the lives of moms through support, education and advocacy? This group understands how easy it is for moms to get caught up in food shopping, cooking, taking care of the kids, and running a household. So it works to refocus women and give them some time to develop themselves.

“Our philosophy is that we’re for the woman behind the mom,” says Tracy Grigoriades, publicity coordinator for the Main Line chapter of Mothers & More.

A cooking demonstration held by Mothers & More. Each month, the group arranges a variety of programs, including guest speakers, social lunches, expert lectures in fields like psychology and economics, cooking demonstrations, and fitness series. The programs are designed to help the 45 women in the Main Line chapter explore unique activities and facilitate intellectual discussion about important issues.

Grigoriades says that being a part of Mothers & More has given her access to a ton of information she wouldn’t have been able to get otherwise. For example, last year an educational consultant answered the members’ burning questions about competition between school districts, how not to hold their children back, and what’s recently changed about schools.

Other discussions are on parenting, the still-evolving role of modern women, and going green at home without busting the budget. Grigoriades says that all of these educational, advocacy-focused programs are meant to develop the group’s mission: “All of the work mothers do, paid or unpaid, has social or economic value. We want to champion the value and necessity of women in society.”

Of course, the organization’s not all about serious, educational workshops. Sometimes, a program just consists of going for a walk and grabbing coffee afterward, participating in a community service project with the members’ husbands and kids, or relaxing with a moms’ night out to the theater.

A mom gets relaxed—and refreshed—at a Mothers & More event.By sharing all of these experiences, the women involved have obviously become quite close. But Grigoriades marvels at how interesting the group dynamic is with the Main Line chapter. “One of the things that makes the group work so well together is the diversity of our members. Some are stay-at-home moms, some work full time, and some work part time. The ages of our members’ kids range from babies to college age. There are single moms, married moms—the variety of our stages and situations really helps everyone learn from each other,” Grigoriades says.

Mothers & More is always interested in more women getting involved. All who are interested can attend any two events before deciding to join, which only entails a membership form and a nominal annual fee. Prospective members are especially encouraged to attend the group’s spring open-house event, “Parenting with Love and Logic,” at 7:30 p.m. on May 5 at the Upper Main Line YMCA (1416 Berwyn-Paoli Road, Berwyn).
