When the U.S. Open comes to Merion Golf Club June 10-16, Nicole and Kenneth Klein hope to be in Ocean City, N.J.—and they also hope their Main Line home won’t be empty. With an estimated 25,000 spectators expected for each day of the storied PGA tournament, life is going to be hectic for nearby residents like the Kleins, who live just a mile from Merion’s main clubhouse. So no one can blame them for trying to make the most of the inconvenience. “We’re asking $8,500 for the week,” says Nicole Klein, one of several owners hoping to rent to golfers, spectators and corporate sponsors.
The house was still available at press time, but Prudential Fox & Roach’s Sara Moyher isn’t worried. “I rented my house to a golfer during the AT&T National at Aronimink,” says Moyher. “The U.S. Open is a much bigger, better attended event, so I knew that there would be a tremendous need for housing.”
Moyher has been so inundated with rental requests from owners that she’s had to turn away people. She currently has 40 listings, with 125 others waiting if needed.
Rentals start at $5,000 and top out at $50,000. “I just finished a listing where the renter is paying $10,000 a day for a house on the golf course,” she says. “That’s a big one.”
But not everyone is on board. A sponsor offered $60,000 to rent a home’s outdoor space for entertaining clients. Moyher had to turn them down. It seems money can’t buy everything, even on the Main Line.
