March for Bragging Rights

There’s nothing like good ‘ol competitive spirit to make the evening fun! More than a dozen high-school marching bands will keep the procession booming in pursuit of a trophy and prize money during the 2015 Old-Fashioned Christmas Parade. The Chamber is happy to welcome back Univest Bank and Trust as the sponsor of this element of the parade. 

Participating bands include West Chester’s Henderson and Rustin high schools, Avon Grove, Downingtown, Bishop Shanahan, Owen J. RobertsChichester, Octorara and Daniel Boone Area high schools, Jackson Liberty, Marple Newtown, Springfield (DelCo), Pottsgrove and A.I. duPont high schools.

“Univest Bank and Trust Co. is proud to sponsor this year’s band competition and get involved in this favorite holiday tradition in West Chester,” said Julie Sommese, senior vice president of Corporate Banking for Univest. Returning for its second year is the ‘Fan Favorite’ contest, in which the winner walks away with $500. “The contest will run Nov. 14-Dec. 4, and details are available at www.univest.net. We invite you to vote online for your favorite band and help us recognize the outstanding talents of these young musicians.”

As the 2014 Grand Champion, Marple Newtown High School will lead this year’s parade, serving as the Honor Band. Three professional judges evaluate the bands on music execution and general effect, marching style and presentation, and use of color. 

Participants will vie for more than $5,000 in prize money, with the Grand Champion walking away with $1,200. Winners will be announced immediately following the parade in front of the historic Courthouse at the intersection of High and Market streets.
