An Ardmore-based custom builder helped these Main Line homeowners create the outdoor pool area of their dreams.

Think of a pool space as an open-air gathering room, a hub for entertaining in sunshine or by firelight. That’s the vibe of an artful compound that blends the verdant views of a traditional Main Line estate with the contemporary aesthetic of Europe and Miami, two of the homeowners’ favorite destinations.

This particular beauty is cantilevered over an embankment, with an infinity edge to give the impression of floating in space. Italian porcelain tiles cover a series of patios and the area around the pool. The pool house features teak cladding set horizontally, its standing-seam metal roof made of zinc imported from Germany. “It’s a very pronounced design element of the project, as the house sits on a hill and the primary views from the kitchen, family room, bedrooms and balcony are looking down on it,” says Ardmore-based custom builder Kyle Lissack.

The outdoor bar and kitchen area are outfitted with integrated cabinets made from the same teak, along with stainless steel cabinets and appliances that can stand up to the weather. The countertop is a monolithic slab of Italian stone selected both for its beauty and ability to accommodate frequent entertaining without compromising its pristine look. The corners of the stone are mitered on all sides to convey a sense of heft and permanence. Mitered end pieces create a visual waterfall down to the patio.

Matthew Moger designed the firepit to be set on an axis across the yard from the pool house, so it becomes an architectural feature when viewed from the pool house bar and a welcoming focal point for people entering the space from the street. Even without the flame, it’s a stunning piece. “The client envisioned the pool house serving as an evening gathering space, as well as during the day,” Lissack says.
