Part of Kristin Thomas’ secret to success is the company she works for. FlexJobs matches companies with professionals who work from home, including Thomas. That allows her to manage her career, four kids and the Malvern Community Arts Project.
What was a turning point in your career?
I worked for Exelon Nuclear. To get into the building, we had to do a biosecurity scan of our fingerprints. I flunked because my fingers were so swollen. I was pregnant with my third child. My first two had been twins, born prematurely. That day, I started rethinking my career. I decided to take time off, and that turned into four years. It allowed me to find a job that fit my career goals and my role as a mom, and to volunteer in the community.
What accomplishments are you most proud of?
My four kids and the Malvern Community Arts Project. It started when I walked into Malvern Pizza and said, “If I can find the money and the artists, can I paint the side of this building?”
What has been your biggest challenge?
Fighting breast cancer. I was diagnosed through a mammogram in September 2013. I’d just turned 40. It was Stage I, but because the cancer was so far back in my chest wall, I decided to have a double mastectomy. I had four kids, including a 1-year-old, and I wanted to eliminate any risk of the breast cancer reoccurring. I made the right decision for myself and my family, and I’m happy to say that I’m totally healthy now.
