1. Dia Doce Gourmet Cupcakes.
I’m always surprised more people don’t know about these—they gained popularity when they won Food Network’s Cupcake Wars. My personal favorite is the Peanut Butter Blackout. 100 S. High St., West Chester, (610) 476-5684.
2. Scott Arboretum.
My wife and I had our engagement photos taken here. It’s a bit of a hidden gem and almost always crowd-free. You can walk through the gardens, archways and outdoor amphitheater at your own pace and enjoy the beautiful grounds of Swarthmore College. Bonus: It’s free. 500 College Ave., Swarthmore, (610) 328-8025.
3. Malvern Buttery.
This spot is easily one of my favorites for a Saturday- or Sunday-morning treat. We try to get there early because the line can get pretty long. Their quiche and breakfast sandwiches get me in the door, and then I’m usually won over by the huge variety of pastries and baked goods. 233 E. King St., Malvern, (610) 296-2534.
4. The Green House.
We’re a little obsessed with plants at our home, and this is easily my new favorite place to shop for them. Try going here and not leaving with a plant. I can’t do it. 43 W. Gay St., West Chester, (484) 574-6870.
5. Linvilla Orchards.
There’s never a bad time to go. We look forward to bringing our almost-2-year-old here as an annual tradition. My favorite part is their market, and bringing home apple-cider donuts. 137. W Knowlton Road, Media, (610) 876-7116.
