MLT: How did you wind up on Making the Cut?

JL: I first got an email from one of the producers on the show—I think she found me on Instagram. I didn’t believe the email was real, so I didn’t pay attention to it. Three days later, I went back to the email and found out that it was legit. By then, I had just seven hours to put together all the documents they needed from me. My husband and I clicked on the submit button five minutes before the deadline.

MLT: What was it like working with Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn?

JL: Heidi and Tim are the true dream team. Heidi is smart and knows exactly what she wants. Tim is so helpful. He was always there to respond to all my questions in front of and behind the cameras. I’ll be forever thankful.

MLT: What’s it like working creatively with cameras and crew everywhere?

JL: They’re so professional that you forget they’re there. I miss them all so much. Working and seeing each other every day for long hours brought us closer. It got to a point where we all became friends.

MLT: Just how competitive is it?

JL: It is very competitive. The best thing you can do to stay focused is to stay true to yourself and give your best.

MLT: How has this experience changed your career as a designer?

JL: I had the great opportunity to receive criticism from people I admire and look up to. I learned so much from them all, and everything good influences my work.
