Interior Designer Glenna Stone Gives a Traditional Bathroom a Modern Update

The decorator made the space in the Villanova home light and airy.

Chestnut Hill-based interior designer Glenna Stone just renovated three bathrooms in a traditional ’70s-era Villanova home. Along with the master and a powder room, the guest bath shown above was utterly transformed. “The owners wanted it to feel light and airy,” says Stone. “We were able to do that in multiple ways.”

An existing skylight over the shower allows for plenty of natural light, while a seamless glass enclosure provides an unobstructed view into the shower, making the room appear larger. The shower walls are covered with a neutral Bursa Beige marble. Emperador marble accents the storage niches and shower floor. “The warm tones give it a welcoming feel,” says Stone.

It was also important for the bathroom to accommodate its smallest guests. In addition to the rainfall showerhead, Stone incorporated a hand-held fixture for the grandkids.

Showers in today’s bathrooms continue to get larger and more elaborate, with jets and body sprays creating a spa-like experience. “One tub in the house is usually enough,” Stone says. “In this house, the tub is in the master bathroom. If you have young kids who take baths, a tub is important, but people simply don’t have time to take baths anymore.”

Soft-cream Crema Marfil marble tops the single-sink vanity. The vanity’s wood motif is repeated on the frame of the medicine cabinet, which was custom made to look like a mirror.

Other bathroom trends include brushed-brass and matte-black finishes on hardware. And steam showers continue to grow in popularity.
