The yellow ochre glass tile backsplash is the first thing to grab your attention in this recently renovated Media kitchen. “The homeowner wanted something fun and a pop of color,” says interior designer, Marcello Luzi, principal of WPL Interior Design, in Ardmore. “It’s a bold color choice that makes a statement.”

This project required Luzi to transform the existing small, dated kitchen into a bright, modern, entertaining space. Removing the wall between the kitchen and formal dining room doubled the amount of space he had to work with, but required half of the room to be reserved for dining.  The clients’ vision went beyond the expected “white” kitchen with their request for two-tone, gray cabinets. “A lot of people have been doing this lately,” says Luzi of the two-tone trend. In order to both satisfy the client’s request and to keep the look more reserved, Luzi chose a light gray for the upper and tall cabinets and for the base cabinets—which can only be seen when you’re in the U-shaped working area—he selected a darker gray. “When you’re sitting in the dining area you’re not even aware that there’s a second color of cabinetry,” he explains. The white countertops are Silestone, a quartz manufactured product. The floors are lined with a porcelain tile and heated for the clients’ comfort. “This is a small space compared to other kitchens we’ve done,” says Luzi. “There were many versions of the layout, but, in the end, the clients were able to get everything they wanted.”
