Nursing Legend

Jo Ann Flounders

Jo Ann Flounders begins her day at 3:30 a.m. Ninety minutes later, she’s starting her rounds, checking in on cancer patients before moving to the outpatient side, where she assists survivors and those preparing for chemotherapy treatments. “I usually don’t leave until 5:30 or 6 in the evening,” says Flounders, a nurse with Broomall’s Consultants in Medical Oncology and Hematology.

Flounders has spent more than half a century caring for patients. Her career has taken her from Villanova University’s nursing school to the United States Navy Nurse Corps, Delaware County Memorial Hospital, Jefferson Home Health (now Main Line Health HomeCare and Hospice), and her current position, where she’s spent the last 23 years. Flounders is also a mother to 10 children.

In 1997, she returned to Villanova for her master’s degree. Over the years, she’s worn everything from a white dress and cap to a naval uniform to lavender scrubs. “Then I earned a white lab coat with my name on it,” she says with a smile. “No matter what the uniform, the nurse in it is still the same and always part of a team caring for others.”

Flounders has been involved in oncology since the 1980s. “I’ve learned the most from patients—people who bravely face their challenges and keep going in spite of their adversities,” she says. “Helping patients attain a degree of wellness and survive serious illness is why I’m an oncology nurse. I can’t think of anything I’d rather do.”

FAQS

Q: How selective is the top nurses directory?

A: Main Line Today employs an annual peer-to-peer balloting system that determines the cream of the crop in the nursing profession.

Q: How many votes does a nurse need to make the list?

A: It depends. Most categories have a standard threshold based on the overall number of nurses. We will sometimes lower the threshold for certain specialties when balloting numbers are low.

Q: Can healthcare systems pay to have their nurses on the list?

A: Never. We receive no compensation from health systems or any other source in exchange for placement on the list. Advertisers are not guaranteed placement. Only after the list has been finalized are nurses notified. At that point, healthcare systems may choose to advertise to celebrate their nurses.

Q: How do you choose the specialties on the list?

A: We consult with healthcare systems for their recommendations.

Q: Do you verify all nurses on the list?

A: Yes. All voters and nominees are vetted using the appropriate state licensure resources, and a balloting coordinator confirms practice information. Every effort is made to collaborate with healthcare systems and employers during the verification process.

Q: I’m a nurse. Why didn’t I receive a ballot?

A: Every effort is made to include as many nurses as possible in the balloting process. Marketing and communications teams at healthcare systems and group practices are called on to help facilitate nominations and verify winners.

Q: Can I find the directory online?

A: Yes. The Top Nurses directory can be accessed for free anytime at mainlinetoday.com.
