The blush of cherry blossoms is a telltale sign that spring is here to stay. A fresh breeze whispers an invitation to come join the season’s symphony of birds and bees while blue skies beckon us beyond our cubicles. Grab a friend or venture out alone on one of these five quintessential Main Line adventures this season.
1. Longwood Gardens’ Spring Blooms
Running through May 26, Longwood Gardens boasts rows of tulips, daffodils and other spring bulbs to wander around. The aroma of the azaleas and the budding dogwoods will be a masterpiece for all senses. Work up an appetite traversing the pretty paths and then head to dinner at La Madera Bistro, nestled in the historic district of Kennett Square, for eclectic plates influenced by Mediterranean and Latin American cuisine.
2. Wander Around Chanticleer Garden
Leave the kids at home and escape to the once private estate that marries art and nature. The Wayne gem has over 5,000 flowers and plenty of Old World charm. The foundation encourages guests to relax, read, meditate, or speak with the gardeners. Keep the romantic aura alive afterwards by dining at Autograph Brasserie.
3. Park Hopping and Picnicking
Visit one (or all) of the parks along Lower Merion Township and pack a picnic lunch. Play baseball at Bala Cynwyd Park, go hiking at Mill Creek Valley Park, channel your inner ornithologist at the bird sanctuary at Appleford Estate while admiring their boxwood gardens. Two- and four-legged friends are welcome.
4. Strawberry Festivals
Enjoy the season’s harvest and pick your own strawberries at Linvilla Orchards, beginning in late May. Once your baskets are full, indulge in a slice of strawberry shortcake celebrating the peak of the local strawberry season at their bakery. The cake is recognized as Delaware County’s largest strawberry shortcake. Afterward, head home and get creative in the kitchen, making a strawberry cobbler, strawberry salsa or some other equally summery treat.
5. The Willows
While Washington, D.C. gets all the attention for their famous cherry blossoms, the Main Line has its own show of cherry trees and daffodils once the temperatures begin to creep up. The 47-acre park at the Willows welcomes wildlife and picnickers to harmoniously enjoy a new season.
