Five Adults-Only Summer Camps that Should Exist But Don’t (Yet)

Writer Katie Kohler wonders why kids should be the ones having all the fun this summer.

Every summer, our kids field a plethora of retreat options designed to immerse them in their favorite things. Camps cover the gamut— sports, STEM, chess, drama, Hogwarts getaways. There’s even kindergarten camp to prep kids for story time, fruit snacks and ABCs. (No word if Arnold Schwarzenegger is a camp counselor.)

So why shouldn’t adults have a chance to dream—minus, of course, lights out at 9 p.m.

Camp Cold Brew

For campers who love their baristas more than their families.

Preferably led by La Colombe founder Todd Carmichael, this getaway brings you even closer (bet you didn’t think that was possible) to the responsibly sourced bean.

Binging Boot Camp

For campers who are approaching maximum-capacity DVR space. Plough through those half-dozen Lifetime movies with essentially the same plot. Actually watch that Netflix show that’s been lingering on your list for over a year. If you must, delete last season of The Bachelor—expect for the last two episodes.

Peace-and-Quiet Club

For campers with young children. Feel free to indulge in a hot meal of your choice, savoring it in its entirety. Take long drives to nowhere that no longer involve Radio Disney. It’s your playlist on shuffle. Enjoy peaceful evenings minus pre-bath and bedtime meltdowns.

Winery Retreat

For campers who end most weeknights with a bottle that would make Olivia Pope jealous. According to, Pennsylvania ranks fifth in the nation for number of wineries. At this camp, the imbibing is spread out over a week.

Camp Pause-for-Paws

For campers who are perpetually behind. Think of it as the ultimate pause button. Attack that cluttered inbox, messy house and mountain of laundry—on the condition that nothing will be added to the pile until you catch up. All distractions are removed, except for one: There’s always time for puppy snuggles.
