I accepted a recent invitation to come check out this over-the-hill-and-far-away English-ish pub in bucolic western Chester County—I say “ish” because, while I haven’t been to England in two-plus decades, I’d like to believe shiny flat-screen televisions aren’t an everyday element of any pub’s décor. In keeping with everything I’d heard or read over the past few years, the vibe was warm and welcoming, with a deft balance of polish and scruff. Ninety-degree-plus temps kept appetites at bay, but we finally got a taste of those Elkins Angus burgers, fish and chips (sans chips), and some very delicious smoked trout and smoked salmon, both served on an ultra-crispy potato pancake.
The concept, the food and the intriguing clientele deserve far more attention than I can spare today, but rest assured, there will be a subsequent visit with pints, I mean reams, of research.
For now, let it be known that when it comes to press giveaways, The Whip is tops. My press booty, “Pub in a Box,” included a pint glass, a bag of funky, crunchy English snacks, a snappy block towel emblazoned with its logo (the perfect bar towel), a wooden-handled beer opener and embossed leather coasters.
Worth the drive? Stay tuned …
P.S. I’m going to Talula’s Table!!! The skinny, and possibly photos, coming soon …
