Extreme (Sort of) Makeovers: Is It a Good Time to Renovate?

The president of the Home Builders Association of Chester and Delaware Counties gives his take on the current remodeling climate.

A recent project by Mingioni Construction. If you’ve been holding off on deciding between granite or soapstone countertops for your dream kitchen, now may be the time to start making some choices. According to a recent report by the National Association of Home Builders Remodeling Market Index, the remodeling market is “moving toward recovery as it continues to flourish.”

Joseph Mingioni, president of Mingioni Construction in Edgemont, concurs. “Remodeling has picked up quite a bit for us in the past few months,” says Mingioni, who is also president of the Home Builders Association of Chester and Delaware Counties.

At one time, his business was split evenly between new construction projects and remodels. Now, the jobs are primarily renovations. “Instead of moving up or buying new, owners are deciding to reinvest more money back into their homes,” he says.

But a concern for over-investing is prompting some to opt for smaller projects. “They’re focusing on more quality projects with quality materials,” Mingioni says.

Kitchens and family rooms seem to be getting the most attention, as well as master suites (with walk-in closets) and luxury bathrooms.

“Homeowners want a better quality of life in their homes,” says Mingioni. “We’re opening up floor plans and maximizing space. Years ago, bigger was better, but that’s not necessarily the trend now.”
