Eat, Drink … and Chill

Rams Head Bar & Grill makes it easy to relax.

Rams Head Bar & Grill’s Boston lettuce wraps. The next time you’re in West Chester and have a craving for a cold draft beer and some hearty gastro-pub fare, check out Rams Head Bar & Grill, which has taken over the amply windowed corner space at Market and South Walnut streets previously occupied by Baxter’s. Globally inspired but not overly ambitious, the menu is just clever and savvy enough to appease more sophisticated diners.

Served with a choice of chicken, beef or shrimp, the Boston lettuce wraps were a standout. My well-seasoned shrimp came laced with a piquant mixture of garlic, olive oil, lemon and paprika, and served on a green horseradish aioli. The accompanying avocados were pristine, and the roasted red pepper slices added a hint of sweetness.

The Cuban sandwich came filled with smoky ham, pulled pork, Gruyère cheese, pickles and tangy Dijon mustard. Though the roll wasn’t grilled like a panini, the crust was soft enough to flatten nicely around the meat and cheese. A side of crispy, boardwalk-style “zesty” fries were a fine accompaniment to the sandwich, which also came with a choice of house-made traditional or plantain chips.

A flight of four craft brews served in 5-ounce mini-pints was impeccably laid out by our server, leaving us in a more blissful state than when we’d arrived. The same could be said about the Rams Head in general. It’s a relaxed spot that will do your appetite—and nerves—well.
