Dr. Martin O’Riordan, Mercy Cardiology

Nominated by Trish DiCanzio, Director of Nursing Operations, Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital

Nearly 500 underserved Penn Wood High School students have participated in sports thanks to free physicals provided through a program created by Dr. Martin O’Riordan. Football, basketball, soccer, track, wrestling, softball, baseball, cheerleading, volleyball, tennis and lacrosse players are examined by a multidisciplinary team of Mercy Health professionals. The students get an EKG, history and physical exam with a cardiologist, and a musculoskeletal evaluation with an orthopedic surgeon and physical therapist. It’s a comprehensive workup, usually the first for many students. The screenings take place in the Sister Marie Lenahan Wellness Center on the Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital campus. The goal for O’Riordan and his 20 colleagues is to prevent sudden cardiac death and other injuries.
