Earth tones are back, only it’s not the saturated browns and autumnal golds of the 1970s. Think gray and off-black—hues inspired by minerals—along with chalky neutrals and dusty blues reminiscent of sand and sky.
Sherwin-Williams has dubbed the palette “Chrysalis,” conjuring a grounded, serene, calming vibe. Like a butterfly emerging from a cocoon, it seems,
interiors are shedding bright colors.
Instead of sharp lines and clear hues, the look is blurred, muted and layered, like the natural formations found in rocks and clouds. Even the names of the colors reflect the palette’s roots in nature: Black Fox, Aqua Sphere, Sticks and Stones.
In the Zen bathroom pictured below, rocks dipped in Roycroft Mist Gray, Oyster Bar and White Hyacinth form a foundation for the freestanding cast- acrylic Abrazo soaking tub from Kohler. The curtain rod, with estate crystal ball finials, is from Restoration Hardware. “An important influence for Chrysalis is the appreciation of earth’s natural striations,” says Jackie Jordan, the paint company’s director of color marketing. “The patterns created by land and sky are driving design inspiration. The palette’s colors are found in nature, from rocks on the beach to a stormy sky.”
