Dos Gringos Mexican Kitchen Fills a Culinary Void in Media

The tiny BYO has a lot to offer, from a salsa bar to $9 pitchers of margarita mix. Here’s our restaurant review.

Greg Quintiliano and Alan Reh, both restaurant veterans, saw the void as their opportunity to establish something truly authentic for downtown diners. Dos Gringos Mexican Kitchen is the result.

Tucked away on South Olive Street in the former John’s Place Diner, Dos Gringos is a friendly BYO serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The interior is tiny, with a few counter seats facing the open kitchen. In nice weather, one of the several outdoor tables on the sidewalk goes perfectly with a $9 pitcher of lemon-lime margarita mix or mango mojito—you bring the tequila, vodka or rum.

Turning tables quickly seems to be Dos Gringos’ goal. Despite the hurried service, the food was tasty enough. The jumbo lump crabmeat over a creamy guacamole was flavorful but not fantastic. You’d be better off sticking to chips and a selection of dips at the self-serve salsa bar, with four variations, fresh cilantro and lime. The verde and chunky tomato were both excellent.

Though the dinner menu is small, there’s something for everyone—from chicken or black-bean enchiladas, to grilled ahi tuna with a mango-coconut rice cake, to carne asada (grilled strip steak) with chipotle mashed potatoes. The enchiladas were tasty—especially the ranchero and salsa verde toppings. A small kids’ menu features quesadillas and soft tacos, plus rice and beans on the side.

All in all, Dos Gringos is a fun, speedy spot to satisfy your Mexican cravings.
