Diego’s Cantina and Tequila Bar Review: Media’s Newest Mexican Hot Spot

Colorful, loud and full of life (and tequila), Diego’s is a fun locale to ease your south-of-the-border cravings.

Mexican eateries have been popping up all over the area in the past year—and Media is now the beneficiary of two. First, it was the cozy, no-frills Dos Gringos Mexican Kitchen. Now, Diego’s Cantina and Tequila Bar offers a vibrant, colorful hub along State Street for the tequila-sipping party crowd, which appears to have already taken up residence in the front bar area.

Noise is definitely an issue at Diego’s, but families and larger groups can comfortably enjoy a meal in the back dining room, which is where we headed. A half-filled bowl of bland, thick-cut chips arrived at our table just as we sat down, though a small ramekin of salsa did provide a bit of heat. The jicama salad—with arugula, spinach, avocado, queso fresco and orange segments—was fantastic, even if the main ingredient, a sweet root vegetable, was noticeably lacking. With its sweet caramelized onions, earthy poblano peppers, mild Chihuahua cheese and epazote, the chicken quesadilla was a meal in itself.

Entrées range from reasonably priced tacos to pricier meat and fish options cooked over an open, wood-fired grill. The mahimahi was moist and flavorful, thanks to its grilled preparation and the sweet mango salsa as a refreshing accompaniment. By contrast, the pork burrito had little meat to speak of—and if you want cheese or sour cream, each extra topping is a dollar. Seriously?

Yet, despite the hurried service and a few culinary disappointments, the food was solid, with a number of bright spots along the way. Diego’s has promise—even if you’re not a tequila fan.
