Create Perfect Thanksgiving Décor with Backyard Finds

Two local florists offer insight into this year’s fall trends.

When friends and family gather for Thanksgiving, the turkey and array of other gourmet eats are sure to wow, but upping the stakes with on point décor can only add to the ambiance. Embrace the transitional aspects of fall and bring an abundance of nature to the table.

Make the most of autumnal hues when picking décor. Focus on jewel tones, like deep purples, plums and pinks, and colors found in nature, like oranges, reds and golds, suggests Michele Fabik of Accents by Michele Flower & Cake Studio in Newtown Square. Bronze is also popular this time of year. “If you tint acorns in a bronze or copper color, that’s in,” she says.

She’s also seeing an uptick in the popularity of natural elements like branches and kale. As for pumpkins, reuse uncarved ones from Halloween. For those who want to elevate this natural element, Fabik advises painting a pumpkin with washable paint.

Those looking to add florals can make use of hydrangeas and roses, two of Kim Sanborn’s favorites. The co-owner and designer at Bryn Mawr Flower Shop likes pairing them with fruits and vegetables like kale, cabbage, yarrow, apples and artichokes. Hypericum berries also make a statement and elevate ordinary Thanksgiving bouquets. Even adding elements like pinecones, acorns and apples can make a big impact.

For Thanksgiving, Sanborn likes to carve a few small pumpkins and fill them with rustic flowers, berries and branches to dress up her table. Outdoors, she likes cupcake gourds paired with pumpkins to add a pop of color.

The best part is, most of those elements can be found in the backyard or at the grocery store. “A lot of people think they need a decorator or help from a florist,” she says, “but, honestly, if you just look in your yard, you’ll find so much inspiration.”
