Though there’s something wonderfully predictable about diner grub, a little less grease—and a little more forethought—never hurts. With the help of Isabella chef Michael Cappon, 401 Diner in Conshohocken is out to go the extra mile.
Local and fresh are the driving principles for owners Tom and Peter Richter. And despite the mostly organic ingredients, everything is affordable at this BYOB. No corkage fee, either.
In true diner fashion, breakfast is offered all day at 401. The menu also features salads, hot and cold sandwiches, and a comforting, meat-and-potatoes-style dinner entrées served after 5 p.m. It’s easy to eat on the healthier side at 401, so it’s no surprise that regulars keep its recycled church-pew booths packed at lunchtime. Start with the organic veggie chili, or opt for a refreshing tabouli salad—a heaping plate of quinoa and bulgur wheat tossed with olive oil and lemon juice, and ringed with feta, olives, cucumbers, tomatoes and red onions.
The Atlantic salmon burger is a refreshing change of pace, its pink, herb-flecked meat soaking up flavor from the tangy lemon aioli and caramelized onions and peppers on top. A diner staple re-imagined, 401’s velvety, grass-fed meatloaf is doused in a generous pour of roasted-garlic jus and served with smashed (locally sourced) potatoes.
