Just 10 months after the launch of her business, With an H owner Meghan Burns created a custom pair of kicks for Kayla Harper.

Meghan Burns always dreamed of being an entrepreneur. During the peak months of the COVID-19 pandemic, she started designing custom clothing through a business she called MB’s Tees but felt there was more to her dream that she was destined to discover. Thus, With an H was born.

With an H is a customization service specializing in sneakers, recycling damaged and vintage materials and making them new again. Burns purchased an old hand crank sewing machine online initially without a clue how to operate it.

“I spent almost a year teaching myself the skills of shoe artistry,” she says. “After countless hours of prototypes, research, mistakes and lessons learned, I finally felt confident that my skills were market ready in January 2022.”

Operating the business out of her childhood home in Montgomery County, Burns spends about two hours carefully deconstructing then reconstructing each pair of shoes for her customers. “Each shoe is handcrafted start to finish using a process that includes deconstruction and custom fabric application in a manual stitching process,” she explains.

Many of Burns’ creations are made from vintage designer goods, but she’s worked on some pretty meaningful projects, too. Two different clients reached out to her to create custom sneakers to honor their late fathers, one using a set of neck ties and the other making use of a pair of scrubs. “I felt so blessed to be able to carry on their loved ones’ legacies in such a special and unique way,” says Burns.

Growing up in a Phillies-loving household, Burns followed Bryce Harper’s wife Kayla Harper on social media and thought she had great fashion sense. Little did she know that one day Harper would be sporting one of her own designs on the field during a very special postseason run.

“I had been following along with Kayla on Instagram for a while,” she says. “I always admired her game-day style and noticed that she was rocking the coolest sneakers. I thought, ‘Why not reach out and see if I could make her a custom pair?’”

Much to Burns’ surprise, Harper was eager to work on custom shoes together, a pair that she could wear for both Phillies games and everyday style. Burns got to work right away, and Harper was able to wear the custom shoes at Citizens Bank Park on the night the Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves in the National League Division Series, a game Burns just so happened to be attending.

“Seeing her on the field in the shoes that I made specially for her was an incredible feeling that I will never forget,” says Burns.
