Rare Bird Handmade Crafts Eye-Catching Jewelry in Havertown

Founder Courtney Jacob creates vintage-inspired baubles that turn upcycled materials into beautiful designs.

Courtney Jacob comes from a family of vintage dealers and collectors. “I was always going to flea markets, yard sales and thrift shops with my parents and Grandma June,” she says. “I’d always make a beeline for the vintage costume jewelry and clothes.”

Jacob got her start repurposing vintage tins, trays, cannisters and other materials to make jewelry. She now runs Rare Bird Handmade, our critics’ pick for Best Handmade Jewelry, out of her home in Havertown. Each earring, necklace and bangle is made from upcycled material, pairing brass with colorful, eye-catching patterns.

Jacob’s personal style is a mix of vintage and modern—and her jewelry reflects that. “I love a classic look, but with fun little vintage details and beautiful patterns,” she says.

Jacob sources items from wherever she can, whether it’s local thrift and antique shops or the homes of friends and connections. “It does help to know people that are in the picker business,” she notes. “They’re always saving things for me.”
