A Stiff Sole Helps Prevent Injuries

How to select the right kids’ sneakers for fall.

Back-to-school shopping typically includes new sneakers. But what types are best for sports? Take this advice from the experts at Crozer-Keystone Health System:

For basketball: Soles should be thick and stiff, and shoes should be supportive enough to prevent ankle sprains, stress fractures and tendonitis.

For soccer, football and other field sports: Choose cleats with the sort of spikes appropriate for the surface involved—soft, hard or firm. And they shouldn’t have more than a half-inch of space between the big toe and the end
of the shoe.

For track: If kids run 20 miles per week, they should get new sneakers every six months. That goes for adults, too.
