Bocconcini is on hiatus until after Labor Day, but now that I’ve got some free time to catch up on my reading—I left town with five different cooking magazines in tow, along with my current nightstand read, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver—I discovered this intriguing skincare line called Be fine (Food & Wine, September), made with vegan ingredients like cocoa, almond oil, brown sugar, cardamom, mint, coconut, rosemary and pomegranate. Surprisingly, the line retails for $30 and under, and is available at CVS, Rite Aid and Wegmans. Check it out at befine.com, which also has a recipe section featuring yummy concoctions like wild mushroom cappuccino and a minty beets and green salad.
Tomato Tip: And in case you’re like me and have had a surplus of green tomatoes in your garden, I’m pleased to report that this tidbit of advice I got from a friend indeed worked to expedite the ripening: simply get in there and cut away as many leaves as you can stand, to expose the tomatoes to the sun. I saw a difference in a matter of two days and am now fully loaded to whip up a bowl of bruschetta and a stack of tomato slices with basil and mozzarella.
For Dessert: Plum and peach cobbler. After all, eating local is in, and we won’t be seeing any peaches from Jersey or PA once this last harvest winds down …
See you in September!
