Each year, museums around the country celebrate Museum Day Live, encouraging residents and visitors alike to explore local museums. This year’s event will take place Sept. 23. Here are some of the participating area museums.
African American Museum in Philadelphia
Take a walk through over 100 years of entrepreneurship, environment, education, religion and family traditions at this museum. Get to know some of Philadelphia’s 18th-century trailblazers like Octavius Cotto, Richard Allen and Frances Ellen Watkins Harper.

Brandywine River Museum of Art
Explore the works of the Wyeth family and beyond at this museum dedicated to American art and the Brandywine Valley. Be sure to check out the “Imagine Brandywine” exhibited, dedicated to the works of area students.

Harriton House
This non-profit will be hosting their 27th annual Harriton Farmstead Fair, complete with tours, pony ride, Bluegrass music and children’s games. The picture of colonial life, Harriton House will also open the doors to their flea market, flowers and organic produce.

Independence Seaport Museum
Enjoy Philadelphia’s nautical roots and link to the construction of the U.S. Navy. Among the current exhibits is “Philadelphia Rowing: Breaking Barriers”, an in-depth history of rowing and the class, gender and race-breaking innovations and accomplishments.

Penn Museum
Discover a new perspective of the world at Penn Museum. Take with you a new and informed assessment of the Middle East with “Cultures in the Crossfires: Stories from Syria and Iraq” exhibit.

The Rosenbach Museum and Library
Bibliophiles will delight in perusing a collection of over 400,000 books and manuscripts. For Dracula fans, take this day to scan Bram Stoker’s original notes for the famous novel.

Scott Arboretum
Explore over 4,000 different types of plants across 300 acres of Swarthmore College’s campus. The always-free arboretum will be giving away greeting cards at the Scott Arboretum offices.
