As a girl, she’d ride her pony past a big red barn and the adjacent stables. As an adult, she purchased the property. By then, the buildings had grown worn—a fond yet faded reminder of her childhood. “The space had so much sentimental value to me, but it was dilapidated,” she says. “I needed help turning my vision into new memories.”
With her horses already at home on a nearby farm, the owner was looking to repurpose the barn into an entertainment space for parties, fundraisers and weekly yoga sessions with friends. She took her wish list to B&D Builders, barn experts with more than 20 years of experience. Partners Ben Esh and Daniel Glick now lead a Lancaster County-based team of tradespeople who build estate homes, professional event venues, and farm and equestrian spaces from Maine to Wyoming.
Functional improvements to the barn included an exposed-beam ceiling with massive chandeliers.
The stables have retained their vintage exterior, with a cedar-shake roof and stall doors that open onto a brick patio. The inside is now a welcoming place for two-legged visitors, housing a luxury apartment. “They gutted the old space and turned it into an absolutely beautiful vaulted one,” says the owner. “They added a proper bathroom and a private office. Then they whitewashed it to match the party barn, creating one continuous aesthetic.”

B&D sister brands Mid-Atlantic Timberframes and Vintage Millwork & Restoration handled timber framing, hardware, woodwork and other specialty aspects of the project. Functional improvements to the barn included an exposed-beam ceiling with massive chandeliers, an expansive kitchen and an HVAC system. Now the barn is fit for all seasons.

“It’s the imperfections they didn’t remove—and the little touches they put in—that set them apart,” the owner says. “It’s a beautiful space, with most of the details handmade using historic materials or processes.”
