Yellow Springs Farm Hosts Holiday Celebrations with Cheese

Forget the shredded and bagged stuff. This holiday, stock up on cheeses your guests will enjoy from a hyper-local source.

The Chester County cheese scene is a beautiful thing, laden with eight artisan, small-batch makers putting forth raw cow milk, goat milk and sheep milk marvels—each unique within themselves, and also, in comparison to the country’s widespread cheese-making industry.

Lucky for locals looking to explore where the creamy magic happens nearby, Yellow Springs Farm (1165 Yellow Springs Road, Chester Springs) invites you to visit their charming goat farm for their “Holiday Celebrations with Cheese” Saturdays, slated to unfold Dec. 15 and 22, noon–4 p.m.

Spend your afternoon with owners/cheesemakers Al and Catherine Renzi exploring their enchanting, eight-acre farm—one rich in local agricultural history as the 150-year-old property was once home to a 200-acre dairy farm. However, the dynamic duo’s hilltop production is just a few years in the making, as they only turned their attention to cheese-making in 2009.

After a few swift years, they now boast an incredible 25-deep cheese repertoire, with each variety produced with additives from their farm, a landscape that’s prosperous in native plants. For example, the Red Leaf is a tangy, earthy goat cheese aged in Sycamore leaves from trees on the property, while the incredible Nutcracker is a salty-sweet semi-soft that’s been immersed in house-made Nocino, an Italian liqueur made from Yellow Springs’ black walnuts.

During “Holiday Celebrations with Cheese,” the farm’s tasting room will be open (based within their restored, original-stone barn), featuring ideal gifts for the food lovers in your life: cheese platters, gift baskets, caramel sauces, cheese accessories, gift certificates and more available. Also, be sure to not miss the affectionate Nubian goats roaming the grassy pastures. They are the stars of this farm, after all.
