Two Philadelphia-Area Bakers to Compete on Netflix’s “Sugar Rush”

The reality competition show will debut on July 13.

This Friday, July 13, Netflix will debut its newest reality baking show, Sugar Rush. Among this season’s competitors are two local bakers, Peri Anderson of Phoenixville’s Brooklyn Girl Bakery, and Jennifer Low of Mt. Airy’s the Frosted Fox Cake Shop.

Hosted by cupcake master, Candace Nelson, and Australian pâtissier, Adriano Zumbo, the show pits four teams against one another through three rounds of challenges. Challenges take the form of a cupcake challenge, a confection and general dessert challenge, and, finally, a cake challenge, with one winning team per episode.

Anderson and Low first met when they were working as pastry chefs in a bakery in Chestnut Hill. “When I started working there, [Anderson] was my pastry chef and I worked for her, and then a couple of years after that, she stepped down from being pastry chef so that she could have her first baby, and at that point I became the pastry chef and she worked for me,” Low recalls. The two remained close friends and Anderson was even matron of honor in Low’s wedding.

When Sugar Rush production company, Magical Elves, reached out to each woman individually to audition for the show, they both were intrigued. When they found out it was a team competition, each thought of the other for her partner. The pairing worked out well, since Anderson and Low have different specialties. Anderson is a master cake maker, concocting everything from intricate wedding cakes to creative birthday cakes in the shape of books and sundaes. Low specializes in cookies, pies, pastries and cakes, which are on display in her shop.

Both made it through the early rounds of auditions before flying to Los Angeles, Calif. for filming last October, where they competed for bragging rights on their episode. Episodes of Sugar Rush will be available for streaming on Netflix starting July 13.
