Top 7 Ways to Celebrate Philly Beer Week

Enjoy one of the many beer-centric events in the suburbs this week.

Philly Beer Week 2014 is in full swing, with hundreds of brewery takeovers, meet-and-greets, beer dinners and pairings and more flooding the greater Philadelphia area. While the bulk of the beer celebration’s events are unfolding within the limits of the City of Brotherly Love, there is a plethora of beer-tasting options hitting the Main Line and its surrounding suburbs. The full list of where you should be sipping this week is detailed below.

On Mon., June 2, Barren Hill Tavern & Brewery’s Scott Morrison invites New England brewer, Mike Fava of Oxbow Brewing Co.,  for an in-house happy hour meet-and-greet. Enjoy a $1 off all guest taps pouring Oxbow beer, with the lineup to include notables like Grizacca, Farmhouse Pale, Loretta, Bandolier and Noel.

Over in Manayunk on June 2, 8 p.m.–midnight, Lucky’s Last Chance will host the sweetest beer event of them all—a cupcake and beer pairing. With the help of their neighbor, Sweet Elizabeth’s, the hip Main Street bar will pair mini cakes with select Southern Tier drafts, including Pumking, Mokah, Creme Brulee, Grand Arbor Saison, 215 and Sonnet Saison. Can’t make it today? Lucky’s will host the following tap takeovers: Green Flash on June 3, Lagunitas and Stone on June 4, DC Brau and Founders on June 5, Weyerbacher on June 6, a Ballast Point brunch on June 7, plus more. We particularly have our eyes on the finale event: a local cider takeover on June 8, at 2 p.m.

Another Manayunk beer hub, Old Eagle Tavern, has a dessert-themed PBW event on the horizon on Tues., June 3. The craft beer bar will collaborate with PA’s ShawneeCraft Brewing Co. for an enticing dessert matchup. Expect pairings such as Apiarius with a raspberry Linzer bar, the Session Porter with chocolate truffles, the Biere Blanche with orange-white chocolate mousse and spicy caramel, and the Belgian Dubbel with slices of apple-cheddar crumb tart.

Newtown Square’s Uno Chicago Grill gears up to host a full-blown East Coast vs. West Coast beer battle on June 3, beginning at 11 a.m. Expect heavy-hitting pours like Green Flash, Port Brewing, Lagunitas and Firestone Walker. Who will get your vote?

Wayne’s Teresa’s Next Door has a full agenda of must-attend events this week too, including the following highlights: Chimay Night on Wed., June 4, pouring Chimay White, Chimay Red, and featuring flights that include Chimay Blue. Whiskey Night unfolds Thurs., June 5, spotlighting a large collection of breweries and their corresponding distillates. Consider this the ultimate beer and a shot event.

On Sun., June 8, local newcomers, Conshohocken Brewing Co., will host a good ol’ fashioned Kegs and Eggs brunch that’s matched up with the cult classic, the Goonies! Special guest host Ryan Niebuhr will be on-site pouring all your favorite Conshohocken releases (and some surprises)—all of which will be on special.

Devon’s Whole Foods Market will finish off its stellar roster of Philly Beer Week events with Mile Post Pub’s notorious Sour Power event, which unfolds June 8 at noon. Beer lovers who crave a tart kick will be satisfied with this tap takeover, which will feature an invigorating selection of wild and Brettanomyces-fermented beers. Take note: the pub’s been saving beers all year for this event—the Mile Post team does not take sour beers lightly!
