The Couch Tomato Makes Pizza Chic

The Manayunk eatery boasts a quirky atmosphere and delectable dishes.

Though some regulars never go beyond the first level, the Couch Tomato also has a casual 75-seat bistro on the top two floors of its Manayunk location. Developed five years ago by business partners and college pals Craig Mosmen and Michael Cassano, the industrial-chic spot is soaked in natural light and boasts superb views from the windows and skylights. Funky metallic chandeliers and hues of mustard and amber accent original brick walls.

Already known for its award-winning pizzas and salads, the Coach Tomato also has great burgers made with 41-day dry-aged, grass-fed beef and a choice of cheeses, sauces and toppings. West Chester’s La Baguette Magique bakes the signature rolls—part brioche, part boule.

The rest of the menu takes everything up a notch. The pan-fried artichoke starter is served atop a bed of spicy arugula, with salty tapenade and a drizzle of lemon aioli. A light coating of cornmeal provides a subtle crunch.

The pan-seared tandoori scallops—over hummus and roasted red peppers with a flavorful sun-dried-tomato aioli—are an absolute must. Tuscan flank steak, pork medallions, pan-roasted cod and pasta dishes like pear-and-walnut ravioli round out the exceptional dinner options.

The white sangria is popular, and Gemelli’s gelato is a best bet for dessert.
