Talula’s Garden: Stephen Starr and Aimee Olexy’s Restaurant Gains National Attention

I knew this Philadelphia restaurant was something special when I ate there a few weeks ago. Bon Appetit magazine has taken notice, too—naming it one of the 10 best restaurants in America.

Have you been to Stephen Starr and Aimee Olexy’s Talula’s Garden in Philadelphia’s Washington Square yet? I have, and you can read all about it in MLT’s October issue. I thought the meal was truly one of the best I’ve had in the city in a long time, and the farm-fresh menu has also made an impression on Bon Appetit’s restaurant-and-drinks editor, Andrew Knowlton.

In the September issue, he names Talula’s Garden as one of the top 10 new restaurants in America for 2011, comparing his meal to what he imagines he’d have seen at Alice Waters’ Chez Panisse in the 1980s. If that’s not a compliment, I don’t know what is.

Knowlton goes on to say that, if he made a list of his top 10 dishes for 2011, three of them would come from Talula’s Garden. What are they? The braised rabbit with handkerchief pasta, soft-shell crab with spicy fennel pickle, and potato gnocchi with succotash and lemon brown butter.

From all the buzz surrounding this new “it” restaurant, I’m hoping it won’t be as hard to get a table at Talula’s Garden as it is to score a reservation at Olexy’s Kennett Square eatery, Talula’s Table.
