Root Down Brewing Company Opens in Phoenixville

The new brewery joins Iron Hill, Stable 12 and Crowded Castle in the borough.

Phoenixville has become a coveted destination for beer lovers, with Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant, Stable 12 Brewing Company and the recently opened Crowded Castle Brewing Company all operating along Bridge Street.

Root Down Brewing Company has also opened, bringing the number of breweries currently operating in the downtown area to four. Stalwart Sly Fox Brewhouse & Eatery operates just a short drive away, and Rebel Hill Brewing Company is slated for a fall opening at 420 Schuylkill Road near the intersection of Rapps Dam Road.

Root Down is owned by Mike Hamara, who also owns Artisan Home Brew in Downingtown. Joining him in the brewhouse is Steve Bischoff, most recently of Sly Fox in Pottstown.

The current beer menu includes brews like Gaia (farmhouse ale), Stay Gold (golden saison), Flying Guillotine (unfiltered American IPA) and Cosmic Brownie (chocolate milk stout).

Chef John Walsh manages the casual kitchen, with menu items like deviled eggs, pretzels, pulled pork sandwiches and platters, bratwurst and biscuits. Order food at a walk-up window and staff will deliver it when ready.

Root Down is located at 1 North Main Street, next to Molly Maguire’s in the former Hires Root Beer production facility.
