5 Refreshing Smoothie Bowl Recipes for Main Line Summers

Stay cool this summer with smoothie bowl recipes from local restaurants that are surprisingly easy to make from the comfort of home.

When the summer heat has you reaching for a bowl of ice cream, try something just as cold, but healthier. Smoothie bowls, made with açai or pitaya—more commonly known as dragon fruit—are loaded with nutrients and antioxidants that can boost brain function and improve cholesterol levels. Plus, they’re just plain delicious.

Two local establishments—the Juice Pod and Bryn + Dane’s (now closed) —share some of their most popular açai smoothie bowl recipes, which are easy to whip up at home.

Bryn + Dane’s Power Blast Açai Smoothie Bowl

Ingredients

For the base:

  • 8 ounces of açai
  • 4 ounces of frozen banana
  • 4 ounces of frozen blueberries
  • 8 ounces of coconut water

For topping:

  • Fat-free granola
  • Banana
  • Peanut butter

Procedure

  • Blend açai, frozen banana, frozen blueberries and coconut water in a blender on high until it has a smooth consistency.
  • Pour base into a bowl.
  • Top with granola and sliced bananas. Add however much you prefer.
  • Drizzle with peanut butter.

The Juice Pod’s All Star Smoothie Bowl

Ingredients

For the base:

  • 2 packets of pure organic açai
  • 1 scoop of vanilla or chocolate whey or vegan protein

For topping:

  • 2 bananas, sliced
  • Organic peanut butter

Procedure

  • Add açai and whey protein in a blender and blend on high until it has a smooth consistency.
  • Pour açai and why mix into a bowl.
  • Top mix with sliced bananas.
  • Drizzle peanut butter on top, to taste.

Bryn + Dane’s Dragon Smoothie Bowl

Ingredients

For the base:

  • 8 ounces of pitaya (dragon fruit)
  • 4 ounces of frozen banana
  • 4 ounces of frozen strawberries
  • 8 ounces of coconut water

For topping:

  • Fat-free granola
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Honey

Procedure

  • Blend pitaya, frozen banana, frozen strawberries and coconut water in a blender on high until it has a smooth consistency.
  • Pour base into a bowl.
  • Top with granola, sliced strawberries and blueberries.
  • Drizzle with honey.

The Juice Pod’s Nutter Butter Smoothie Bowl

Ingredients

For the base:

  • 2 packets of pure organic açai

For topping:

  • 1 banana, sliced
  • Blueberries
  • Nutella
  • Organic peanut butter

Procedure

  • Blend açai in a blender on high until it has a smooth consistency.
  • Pour base into a bowl.
  • Top with sliced banana and blueberries.
  • Drizzle with Nutella and peanut butter.

Bryn + Dane’s Sunrise Smoothie Bowl

Ingredients

For the base:

  • 8 ounces of açai
  • 4 ounces of frozen banana
  • 4 ounces of frozen blueberries
  • 8 ounces of coconut water

For topping:

  • Fat-free granola
  • A dash of cinnamon
  • Coconut flakes
  • Honey

Procedure

  • Blend açai, frozen banana, frozen blueberries and coconut water in a blender on high until it has a smooth consistency.
  • Pour base into a bowl.
  • Top with as much granola and coconut flakes as you like.
  • Sprinkle with cinnamon.
  • Drizzle with honey.
