Popular Kennett Square BYOB, Portabello’s, is expanding its capacity by relocating to a larger space, just a few blocks down State Street. There, chef Brett Hulbert and his team will have plenty of room to spread out, as will patrons, when the new space opens toward the end of summer.
Currently at 115 W. State Street, Portabello’s is cute and cozy, but has its space limitations. But with a jump to 108-112 E. State Street (formerly Enzo’s Italian Eatery and the Kennett Paper News), Hulbert, along his wife and business partner, Sandra Morris, will soon have roomier digs to work within, and a new liquor license too.
Although larger, the new space will retain Portabello’s charm. “Currently we have 50 seats. With the transition, we’ll go to 160,” says Morris. “By having greater kitchen space, we’ll be able to offer a lighter menu option at both lunch and dinner, while still retaining our regular day and nighttime menus.”
Expect the same distinct mushroom-centric cuisine with Italian, French and Asian influences. While the food will remain the same, the bar will change, thanks to a liquor license. Expect a complete beer, wine and craft cocktail program showcasing specialized martinis and Manhattans.
Accordingly, the new space will feature a full bar and lounge, along with two private dining rooms which will allow for group gatherings like bridal showers, rehearsal dinners and corporate events, or additional guests on busy nights.
Elsewhere, expect to see high-top chef’s tables that will provide a dramatic vantage point to the open kitchen. The restaurant’s front façade will be inlaid with retractable windows and doors, allowing for natural light to filter in and for bringing the bar and lounge areas out toward the bustling street.
An opening date hasn’t been set, but Hulbert and Morris expect to be open sometime in August. “We’ll definitely be open in time for the Kennett Square Mushroom Festival [on Sept. 8- 9],” assures Morris.
