With its humble West Philly beginnings as a pizza joint in 1941 to its status as a beloved full-service restaurant in Upper Darby for the past 60 years, Pica’s now has designs on winning over West Chester. Its signature dough is created, kneaded and delivered fresh from the same Broomall facility used for the Upper Darby location. But its the wholly unconventional “upside-down” layering that give these pies their legendary status. This leaves the slightly sweet tomato sauce on top, and the gooey sliced cheese, pepperoni and other toppings underneath.
The abbreviated menu favors entrées like eggplant Parmesan, crab cakes, pan-seared salmon and create-your-own-pasta dishes. The desserts are all decadent, but it’s the housemade cannoli we love the most.
Over 200 seats fill the spacious interior dining areas, which are still subdued enough for chatting. In the center is a full-service bar, for those requiring a little nip with their bite. The exterior boasts stacked fieldstone walls and a clock tower. And with a busy pickup vestibule on the west side of the building, it appears that locals are already taking full advantage of the to-go option.
