Mushroom Festival's Amateur Cook-Off Now Qualifier for World Food Championships

The lucky winner from this annual culinary event will get automatic entry into the World Food Championships.

The 31st Annual Mushroom Festival will be held in Kennett Square, the mushroom capital of the world, Sept. 9–11 this year. The festival features a community parade, antique car show, live music, carnival, growing exhibits, children’s activities, over 200 vendors and an amateur culinary cook-off.

The 2016 Mushroom Amateur Cook-off will be bigger and better than ever, as it is now a pre-qualifying event in the recipe category of the World Food Championships. This year, the theme of the WFC’s recipe category is breakfast.

For those who make a great mushroom omelet, mushroom pancake or other mushroom-infused creations, now’s the time to shop off your talents. Competitors are tasked with creating a breakfast dish featuring mushrooms that are commercially grown in Kennett Square, such as button, crimini, portabella, oyster, maitake and shiitake.

The winner of the Mushroom Festival’s Cook-off will receive a Golden Ticket to the World Food Championships in Orange Beach, Ala., held Nov. 8–16, and will compete in the recipe category. Participants will compete for a range of awards and prizes, including the WFC grand prize of $100,000.

Think you have what it takes to win? The deadline to enter the competition at the Mushroom Festival is June 17. Get all the details on how to enter at www.mushroomfestival.org.
