Always the first weekend after Labor Day, Kennett Square’s 34th Annual Mushroom Festival returns on Sept. 7-8, drawing close to 100,000 mushroom lovers.
Look for 250 vendors to set up craft, event and food booths along State Street in the Mushroom Capital of the World. The culinary tent on Broad Street will host a wide variety of regional and local chefs who will share mushroom recipes and tips for cooking with mushrooms. Among the particpants are Grain Craft Bar + Kitchen’s Bill Wallen, Hearth Kitchen’s Bryan Sikora and Anthony Young of Hank’s Place.

The popular Amateur Mushroom Cook-Off will take place on Saturday, where finalists are judged on favorite mushroom recipes, which they’ll prepare for the contest. Pasta with mushrooms will be featured. Also look for the National Fried Mushroom eating championship, taking place on Saturday at 3 p.m. Competitors will attempt to set the world record (11.5 pounds) for consuming mushrooms in eight minutes.
There will be plenty of family-friendly entertainment throughout the weekend, too, including a carnival, an antique and classic car show, zip-lining, bungee jumping, ax-throwing, a baby photo contest and a pop up Flyers Community Caravan. Bands on the community stage will also keep things lively as attendees and participants celebrate the borough’s favorite fungi.
