It’s hard to live in the Philadelphia suburbs without having eaten in at least several Jose Garces restaurants. He now owns seven restaurants in the city, and each one is a personal work of art for the Iron Chef. It’s easy to tell from tasting Garces’ food that there’s more than just a sheer love of cooking behind his creations. His recipes and ingredients impart stories and experience, and in his second cookbook, The Latin Road Home: Savoring the Foods of Ecuador, Spain, Cuba, Mexico, and Peru, Garces lets readers in on his personal journey of the places and experiences that have helped shape who he is as a chef today.
The Latin Road Home is more than a cookbook (although there are more than 100 featured recipes). The book is also a memoir, photo album and travelogue and Garces takes the reader on his journey from Ecuador with recipes and stories from his childhood to Peru where he has gleaned much of his inspiration. The cookbook is already receiving praise from some of the country’s top chefs so it’s sure to be a keepsake as well as an exciting culinary reference. Look for Garces’ new cookbook this October for $35 by Lake Isle Press.
