Hot Plates Awards 2013: Welsh Rarebit, The Whip Tavern

Welsh Rarebit from The Whip Tavern in Coatesville.

Even out-of-towners can’t get enough of this authentic English pub’s Welsh rarebit. A recent diner from the West Coast loved it so much that he tried to recruit the Los Angeles Times to seek out the recipe. A blend of English cheddar, Stilton cheeses and Smithwick’s Irish Ale is spiced with a bit of British mustard before making a quick trip under the broiler, where it’s browned to perfection. The dish is served with crostini. $7.99.
