Pumpkin pie. Pumpkin soup. Pumpkin cheesecake. Pumpkin latte. Pumpkin … ale? But, of course. After all, ’tis the season. And around these parts, there’s more than enough sweet ’n’ spicy sips to go around. If you’re looking to add a bottle or two to your fall entertaining repertoire, there’s Dogfish Head Punkin Ale, which hails from Milton, Del., and gets its name from the annual Punkin Chunkin Festival held near Lewes the weekend after Halloween. Any beer from the award-winning Dogfish Head line is worth a try, and this one is no exception. In fact, it took home the bronze at this year’s BrewNZ Beer Awards in New Zealand. Brewed with pumpkin meat and organic brown sugar for a full-bodied flavor, Punkin Ale packs an upfront punch that’s fairly light on maltiness, with a slightly spicy cinnamon kick at the finish. The modest head won’t wow you, and the mouth feel might be starchier than you’re used to. But the deep-orange color is alluring, as is the beer’s versatility. It goes quite well with roasted meats—especially turkey, lamb or duck. It also makes an excellent after-dinner beverage. And with a beer this tasty, who needs pie for dessert?
