Local Guide to Oktoberfest Season: Iron Hill Specials, Wursthaus Party, Beer Festivals & a Pub Crawl

Suds lovers, rejoice! Oktoberfest season is here, chock-full of beer celebrations brewing from now until the end of October. Relax, get thirsty and let the beer-tasting begin!

Thru Oct. 13, Glenmorgan Bar & Grill in the Radnor Hotel will feature a three-course, $29 prix fixe dinner menu brimming with hearty German cuisine. Executive chef Michael Luongo’s enticing Oktoberfest lineup includes options like cheese fondue,  bratwurst with bacon and apple sauerkraut, Sauerbraten, apple strudel, and much more. 

From Sept. 27 – Oct. 13, all ten locations of Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant will celebrate Oktoberfest by tapping a special roundup of seasonal beers, plus feature a hearty food menu featuring specials like Bavarian lentil soup, Schlachtplatte (butcher’s plate with brats, knockwurst, pork loin & more), Huhner Schnitzel, and more. 

On Oct. 4, from 1-6 p.m., Wursthaus Schmitz, Brauhaus Schmitz’s Reading Terminal Market-based German-style delicatessen, debuts its second installment of Oktoberfest celebrations. The 12th Street market-based shop will transform into a blue-and-white Bavarian wonderland, with acclaimed chef Jeremy Nolen busting out killer authentic grub, including sausage and roast pork sandwiches. Wursthaus will partner with Molly Malloy’s, a neighboring pub within the market, to pour German beer on a pay-as-you-go basis. Better yet, attendees can test their luck at winning tickets to attend Oktoberfest with the chef at the New York City Wine and Food Festival on Oct. 20. Visit brauhausschmitz.com/wursthaus-schmitz.

The King of Prussia Beerfest Royale returns for 2013 as a two-day beer fest, set to unfold on Thurs., Oct 3, with the Donnerstag: Happy Hour, and on Saturday, Oct. 5, with the main event. As an extensive outdoor craft-beer extravaganza pouring more than 100 craft and international beers, a wide array of fare from area restaurants, and live music, we’re proclaiming this event is one “not to miss.” Thursday’s session, coined the “Donnerstag: Happy Hour,” is an all-inclusive evening of food and beer pairings, beer-infused cocktails, a cigar lounge, and live music by The Hoppin’ John Orchestra. The main event on Saturday is split into two sessions, from noon-3:30 p.m. or 6-9:30 p.m. More than 50 brewers with over 100 beers will pack the King of Prussia Mall parking lots for this, with live music elevating the outdoor bash. Another craft beer-centric tasting will take shape on Saturday, Oct. 5—the Kennett Brewfest. As one of the leading events of the beer festival circuit, featuring over local and regional breweries pouring over 150 releases, the Historic Kennett Square event is a perfect opportunity to taste-test all the beers you’ve been dying to explore—and more. And, as if you didn’t have enough beer-infused plans on Oct. 5, the annual Oktoberfest Pub Crawl is also taking over Bridge Street in Phoenixville on the same day, as of noon.
