You could argue that Keith Taylor became a culinary pioneer in Montgomery County when he opened Zachary’s BBQ & Soul seven years ago. “I’ve always believed that exceptional soul food should be a viable choice for people—like Chinese, Italian or Jewish food,” he says.
Recently, Taylor rebranded Zachary’s (named after his son), adding a warmer color scheme inside and expanding the menu. Takeout business remains brisk, as does the demand for his trademark Shaker Fried Chicken, the tender smoked-turkey collard greens and his creamy four-cheese baked macaroni. The menu continues to read like a pitmaster’s portfolio. The pulled barbecue chicken, Carolina pulled pork, St. Louis ribs and Angus beef brisket are all made with house-recipe rubs and sauces. Fried catfish and the white-chicken chili are among the other highlights. Sides of note include potato salad, warm cornbread and maple-mashed yams.
And be sure to save room for a slice of maple Kentucky-bourbon pecan pie.
