VIA SNAIL MAIL …
On behalf of all of the members of the Orpheus Club of Philadelphia, we would like to thank you for the generous portrait of the club published in your July 2014 issue. We appreciate the time and effort J.F. Pirro put into getting to know our 142-year-old organization in a very short period of time.
As is perhaps inevitable, there are a couple of amendments we’d like to offer for the benefit of our more particular members. While we do have our annual day of sports and fellowship at Philadelphia Cricket Club each June, the dinner that evening is distinct from our formal annual dinner held each January at the clubhouse, which is where we pass the cup and toast each other in song.
Also, while now-past president John Wright is indeed a Haverford School alumnus, grew up on the Main Line, and was a member of Merion Cricket Club, MCC’s members may be relieved to hear that he doesn’t claim to be a past president of that fine club. Past Orpheus president Bob McAdoo, however, is also a past president of Merion Cricket.
That these are the only errors we could mention should confirm how well you caught the character of the club.
James B. Straw, President
John B. Wright II, Immediate Past President
Orpheus Club of Philadelphia
