When Steven Grasse created Art in the Age Craft Spirits almost a decade ago, small-batch, artisanal spirits were the exception rather than the norm. He had already seen success as the creator of Hendrick’s Gin and Sailor Jerry Rum but wanted to innovate beyond established spirits categories. The unique flavors and historical recipes of Root, Sage, Snap and Rhubarb Tea were well received by both consumers and bartenders and quickly gained national distribution, which is again growing.

After years of masterminding spirits brands, Grasse finally opened his own distillery in rural Tamworth, N.H. The curious location for the longtime Philadelphia area resident and business owner ultimately came down to the very essence of spirits: water. Concerned about industrial pollution in the city, he was drawn to New Hampshire’s granite bedrock and clean, clear Ossipee Aquifer—one of the purest on the East Coast.

Tamworth Distilling & Mercantile serves as a test kitchen for new Art in the Age flavors as well as new creations following the brand’s historically inspired, farm-to-bottle ethos. Each begins with GMO-free grain sourced from within 150 miles, which is hand-milled in-house before being distilled into neutral grain spirit. Distillers Matt Power and Jamie Oakes then add fresh, seasonal ingredients from local farms, foraging trips to the woods or the botanical garden in the distillery’s backyard to create unique and delicious spirits like Apiary Gin, with local wildflower honey, or Black Trumpet Blueberry Cordial, with foraged blueberries and mushrooms from Tamworth neighbors New Hampshire Mushroom Company.

These exclusive new spirits have previously only been available on-site at the distillery and in select spots in New York City. Beginning May 26, five products from Tamworth Distilling & Mercantile will be available through special order at Pennsylvania’s Fine Wine and Good Spirits: Flora Gin and Apiary Gin from the Tamworth Garden series, Von Humboldt’s Natur Wasser Tamarind Cordial and two Art in the Age Infusions from the test kitchen, Black Trumpet Blueberry Cordial and Chicory Root Vodka. Items can also be purchased online at Fine Wine and Good Spirits, though quantities of these seasonal, small-batch spirits are limited.
